Absolutely stupifying that nowhere does anyone say specificallyu how to install chrome portable. If any site did, the instructions would disclose if it matters where the user runs the installer from (likely not, but not mentioned), secondly and most important, nowhere does any site disclose where the user should choose to install the file 9as prompted it defaults to My Documents folder). To me, installing a program on a flash drive, means the pc probably doesn't or shouldn't need any of the installation files stored on the pc. So, assumedly a truely portable chrome is installed entirely onto the users flash drive, but why does the installer default to installing program files into the user's 'My Documents' or 'Documents' folder!? At that point, I change the default location to the flash drive, but I notice quite a difference in how long the browser takes to load (noticeably faster if the default storage location is used). I'm fairly certain one or both of these unmentioned aspects of installing chrome, can make a difference, so why isn't anyone disclosing specific details about how to run the installer and where to store the program files that the installer prompts users to choose a storage location??

Ah so it was a conflict with another application (Synaptic-made, doesn't surprise me). Good to know, thanks for telling me. :)

Although not really related to the issue I have been posting about above, I seem to have fixed the problem by following the instructions here and amending the sysplant registry key: http://www.vaidy-dyngp.com/2009/02/google-chrome-symantec-endpoint.html

Cheers!

No luck.

I've installed your latest version but that didn't improve anything. Neither did re-unpacking the chrome-bin with 7-zip portable (into the App folder).

As I type a URL, the Chrome parser recognizes the possible names and forms the list under the address bar, so at that point at least the program is working. However, when I press enter on the address bar (any url), the app does nothing and then after a while tells me that the page has become unresponsive.

Ah well....

Thanks anyway.

For some reason I thought Wordpress would actually insert my replies under the comments I was replying to. Oh well.

I suggest you use www.google.com for testing to see if Chrome really won't load pages, since Google has excellent load speed and uptime.

Also Google Chrome may do what you describe if you try to run it from a network drive on newer Windows OSs. Other than that I have no clue what the problem might be. I just released new versions of Google Chrome Portable today so you could try one of them.

Hi Dan,

I followed your install instructions and the latest version of Chrome beta runs fine from my PortableApps menu. However, Chrome will not load any web pages. I eventually just get the message about stopping the page.

Any ideas?

Thx

Recent releases use the local hard disk for Cache so it should run a bit better. Unfortunately the speed will still be limited by the speed of your drive. There is another option to copy the entire profile locally though (see GoogleChromePortable.ini in Other\Source) which should be a bit faster.

Unfortunately it seems that the update feature is broken when it is run portably. However you can update it by hand; see the instructions here on installing a local Chrome or an arbitrary version Chrome: http://portableapps.com/node/19823#comment-122142

Hi, what are the contents of the GoogleChromePortable\App\Chrome-bin folder? You should see chrome.exe, wow_helper.exe, and several folders.

Hi, unfortunately the new PortableApps.com Installer I am using, though very nice, is rather inflexible. However the next release will have a text-based guide you can follow to use a local Google Chrome Portable. It is not very difficult to do by hand. :)
